Matt, from CJ Insurance meets Ronnie Radford at the launch of the exciting new production of ‘The Goal’

The Courtyard in partnership with Hereford Football Club are launching a special Herefordshire theatrical project based on the legendary goal scored by Ronnie Radford in 1972.

The production is called; The Goal. The story will explore the lives of six ball boys at the match. Nick Lane, writer, has based the story on eye witness accounts of this famous match which took place on 5 February, which has created a great story for the run up to this landmark event.

The star of the match was Hereford Football Club’s Ronnie Radford, who famously scored the equalising goal against the giants that were Newcastle at non-league Hereford. In the word of football commentator John Motson: “Oh, what a goal! What a goal! Radford the scorer…and the crowd are invading the pitch”.

Ian Archer, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of The Courtyard, said: “This is a fantastic idea for a production, The Courtyard has a great working relationship with Hereford Football Club so it is great to work on a project with a shared ‘Goal’. I have worked with the writer Nick Lane, several times and he knows how to capture a special moment, so the audiences are in for a treat and there’s no better year than our 20th Anniversary year”.

Ken Kinnersley, Chairman of Hereford Football Club, said: “It’s incredible in this day and age with footballers being transferred for multi million pounds sums that a goal scored at Edgar Street in Hereford on a muddy pitch in the 3rd round of the FA Cup some 46 years ago is still being used by TV producers to epitomise the competition. Of course, all the fans recognise there are many different factors all wrapped up in that 1972 win over Newcastle United. Last year the HFC Board met with The Courtyard to and we came up with the idea for stage play based on the Ronnie Radford goal as a club, of course, we were keen to be involved.”

The Goal takes place at The Courtyard from Monday 1 to Saturday 13 October. Tickets for the show go on sale on the anniversary of The Goal, Monday 5 February, from 10am, for a full list of times, dates and prices look online at or contact the Box Office on 01432 340555
